This is your first newsletter since January due to emailing problems. We hope you enjoy this new edition and we look forward to your comments.

Let me remind you that the IRF Bulletin 'EUROPE' is due to be published end of June / beginning of July 2009. With this in mind, we would like to encourage you to submit a contribution by the 28th of May 2009.

The IRF Bulletin 'EUROPE' is the third of the special editions on geographical areas. Your contribution can focus on a number of themes, i.e

• The global economic crisis and transport in Europe challenges
• ITS and sustainable development
• European road projects
• Materials and processes used in Europe
• Innovative financing and contracting for road networks
• Environmentally friendly construction and operation

Once again, the articles on one of the above mentioned sub-themes should contain 500 to 600 words and include pictures, graphics, charts etc. The deadline for submission of articles is set for Wednesday, 27 May 2009.

An article contain 500 to 600 words and include pictures, graphics, charts etc. Please be aware that we may not be able to publish all the articles received. The editorial team reserves the right of editing the article before including it in the Bulletin, but will revert to you for approval. IRF Geneva General Assembly 2009

On 23rd April 2009, IRF Geneva held its annual General Assembly/Board of Directors meeting in Paris, France. In the beautiful boardroom of the FNT (Fédération Nationale des Travaux Publics), and against the spectacular backdrop of the Eiffel Tower, the General Assembly reviewed activities undertaken in 2008 and commended the actions planned for 2009.

IRF Man of the Year 2008

Alain Dupont began his career over 40 years ago as a young engineer with SCREG, today part of the Colas Group. In 1987, he was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of the Colas Group. Under his leadership, Colas grew and thrived. The Group became an industry leader in high safety standards and undertook groundbreaking research into environmentally friendly construction materials. Similarly, it pioneered the assessment of CO2 emissions from road construction projects using a GHG calculator.

IRF Contributes to the BSEC Meeting

The IRF was cordially invited to take part in the working group meeting held at the BSEC Headquarters in Istanbul, Turkey from 12-13 February 2009. This meeting was attended by delegates representing BSEC member states, NGO’s and International Organizations. The Working Group on Transport meeting was chaired by the representative of the Republic of Armenia, who holds currently the presidency of the BSEC, and addressed by the Secretary General of BSEC PERMIS.

The European Commission Meets Transport Stakeholders to Discuss the Future of the Transport Policy

Policy makers, academics, Member States officials, NGOs have been convened in Brussels on 9 and 10 March by Commissioner Tajani to kick off the preparation of the 2010 White paper on the Future of Transport policy. The International Road Federation was present at the meeting - with staff from the Geneva and the Brussels office - to channel our Federation input into the discussion.

SOMARO has been renamed AXIMUM

At 12 p.m. on Wednesday 26 November 2008, at the Salon des Maires et des Collectivités Locales, SOMARO, the leader in road equipment and services, announced its new name with effect from 1 January 2009: AXIMUM.

SOMARO (Société de Matériel Routier) was established in 1958 and has grown organically, but also and more particularly through numerous acquisitions in all areas of road safety: guardrails and barriers, road marking, traffic signs, illuminated signs and traffic management (traffic lights, etc.).
