The International Road Federation (IRF), founded in 1948, is the international point of affiliation for national and regional associations around the world.

Every year since 1964, the IRF has published the "WORLD ROAD STATISTICS", the only comprehensive guide of its kind containing international road, traffic and transport data. This publication supplies a number of Sustainable Development Indicators and relevant data to aid and development institutions, as well as to international organisations, funding agencies and United Nations divisions. It is used by such agencies as the United Nations Development Programme, The World Bank and the CIA for their own publications: for example, the World Bank uses World Road Statistics to prepare a part of its own publication, World Development Indicators.

We are especially proud of the 2009 version of World Road Statistics which, with an eye on lessening our own carbon footprint, has been published as a CD-ROM with an accompanying booklet only.  The booklet gives selected key figures, maps, charts and graphs. The CD-ROM includes detailed statistical reports and tables in Portable Document Format (PDF) and Microsoft Excel format.  The IRF now offers various license agreements for institutions, organisations and academic research institutes that would be interested in purchasing the WRS for multi-users within the organisation as a whole.

The WRS 2009 includes high quality road and transport statistics for more than 185 countries which  have been compiled from different sources at international and inter-governmental levels  including the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe and Africa, World Bank IMF, IEA, African Development Bank, Asian Development Bank, OECD, CIA, EUROSTAT, ECMT, GTZ, OICA and WHO.

Chapters include:

  • Country profiles
  • Road networks
  • Road traffic
  • Multimodal traffic comparisons
  • Vehicles in use
  • Road accidents
  • Production, imports, first registrations and exports of motor vehicles
  • Road expenditures
  • Energy
