History - IRF | International Road Federation - Better Roads, Better World

The International Road Federation, since its foundation in 1948, has had many successes over the past 60 years and has much to be proud of. Not only has it been instrumental in providing leadership for global road infrastructure development, but it also brought road professionals and people of the world together in a common mission in a way that no other road organisation could.

IRF’s history is rich in events and has been closely linked to the development of the world economies. Facing new challenges every decade, the IRF has never stopped promoting efficient, well-maintained, safe, environmentally and economically sustainable roads and road networks.

The IRF Geneva Programme Centre office was established in 1964. During the official launch, the IRF said, “Now, more than ever before, the automobile and the motor truck have become the foundation on which the expanding horizons of the modern world must depend”; in today’s globalised economy, this affirmation still stands true and the IRF GPC’s mission of encouraging and promoting the development and maintenance of better, safer and more sustainable roads and road transport systems in all its regions of influence seems to be as important, if not more vital to the future of the world population’s well being.
