IRF launches 49th edition of annual World Road Statistics
Since the first edition in 1964, IRF annually produces the largest compilation of road statistics in the world. This year's edition includes data from over 200 countries, collected from primary statistical sources worldwide. The World Road Statistics or WRS in short, are the leading reference source for road industry leaders, analysts and international organisations.
Apart from generic information such as general country profiles, data sections in the World Road Statistics cover the size and characteristics of road networks, traffic, multimodal traffic comparisons, vehicles in use, road accidents and road expenditures. New in the 2012 edition is a section on CO2 emissions from inland transport.
IRF collaborates with numerous partners to further enrich and improve its data set each year. Through its Director of Statistics, Mr Cristian Gonzalez, IRF is actively involved in the Task Force initiated by the International Transport Forum (ITF) to address the theme of "Measuring Investment in Transport Infrastructure". The main objective of this initiative is to come up with sound statistical methodologies to survey related indicators.
Next year, IRF will be celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the WRS and plans to mark this landmark occasion with the publication of a commemorative Gold Edition featuring a review of key Millennium data on road, traffic and inland transport.
As it plans for this important celebration, IRF would like to take this opportunity to express its appreciation for the unstinting support from its national partners. It is they who have made this half-century of achievement possible, and it does great credit to the power of international collaboration as well as vision and commitment of our sector.
Copies of the 2012 IRF World Road Statistics can be purchased through IRF World Road Statistics.
