Fostering truck driver safety in India at the core of IRU-IRF collaboration

In a unique collaboration between the road infrastructure and transport operator industries, the International Road Federation (IRF) and the International Road Transport Union (IRU) are teaming up to address truck driver safety in India.
At the occasion of the 67th meeting of UNECE Working Party 1 on Road Traffic Safety on 4-6 December in New Delhi, IRU and IRF will jointly launch the dissemination of informative safety cards in Hindi. These cards provide tips and guidelines for truck drivers to ensure a safe and comfortable journey, explain the risks of using mobile phones while driving and outline how to respond in accident or emergency situations to save lives.

“We are very pleased to support driver education for enhanced driver safety in India with a very practical contribution through the driver safety cards. It gives a very tangible shape to our commitments to the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety,” according to Kiran K. Kapila, Chairman of the IRF.

“For true road transport professionals, every road accident is one too many. Effectively improving road safety requires professional drivers to be constantly aware of risks and best practices, as well as high quality training. This is what the IRU is pursuing through IRU Academy Training Programmes and our safety cards for drivers. We are very pleased to team up with IRF to effectively and broadly disseminate such initiatives”, said IRU Secretary General, Umberto de Pretto.
