2nd meeting of the EU ITS Advisory Group

On 26 February the EU ITS Advisory Group convened for its second meeting in the Berlaymont Building in Brussels. Three themes were addressed on the meeting's agenda: 1. The ongoing efforts into developing specification supplementing the ITS Directive; and 2. Deployment strategies for Cooperative Systems; and 3 Funding of ITS Deployment: EU instruments and strategies.

The IRF is delighted to be part of the Statistics 2013 initiative and support the International Year of Statistics

This year 2013, our IRF's flagship product World Road Statistics (WRS) is celebrating the 50th Anniversary and planning to publish a commemorative edition. This publication is the main statistical reference for governments, international organizations, public and private companies, NGOs, investment banks, research and academia and the media.

Chinese delegation visiting IRF Geneva offices

A delegation of Chinese officials representing Chinese public transport companies and transport media paid a visit to the IRF Geneva offices during its European study tour on Tuesday 15 January. The delegation was welcomed by Mrs. Caroline Visser, Deputy Director General, Mr. Cristian Gonzalez, Project Officer Data & Statistics, and Mr. Barry Gilbert Miguet, responsible for media contacts within the IRF Geneva office.

Workshop on Fostering ITS Policy

Hosted by IRF member TTS Italia, the IRF Policy Committee on Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) and TTS Italia jointly organised a one-day workshop on Fostering ITS Policy. The workshop took place in the city of Bologna, Italy, on Wednesday 5 December 2012. It was held in conjunction with TTS Italia’s second edition of the Nuovo Mundo conference. The workshop addressed various topics, such as the ITS policy context in Italy and ITS university education and research, as well as a panel debate on how to communicate the benefits and opportunities, for society, business and general public.

Marrakech confirmed as venue for next meeting of the IRF Group of Experts on Road Safety

The next meeting of the IRF Group of Experts on Road Safety will take place on Monday 18th March 2013 from 14:00 to 17:30 at the Hotel Pullman Palmeraie Resort & Spa, Marrakech, Morocco. The meeting has been scheduled to coincide with, and tap into the major IRF Regional Conference: North Africa & Mediterranean (see separate article) which will be taking place at the same venue over the following two days, 19-20 March, 2013.

IRF @ the TRB and Transforming Transportation Conference

The Transport Research Board (TRB) week in Washington DC has been as usual a busy week for IRF and its members. Many of them have been presenting in the official programme, exhibiting and/or hosting receptions which have provided valuable opportunity to connect with the extended IRF family, partner organisations and the profession as a whole. We take this opportunity to thank our member, Cambridge Systematics, who has hosted many of us at its traditional TRB reception.

3rd meeting of the Task Force on Measuring Spending on Investments in Transport Infrastructure

A 3rd meeting of the Task Force on Measuring Spending on Investments in Transport Infrastructure was organised by the International Transport Forum (ITF) at the OECD in Paris on 29th January 2013. IRF Geneva belongs to this selected group and it is represented by its statistics and data expert, Cristian Gonzalez, who has been invited to contribute to the Manual of Best Practices devoted to measuring transport infrastructure spending and assets.

IRF Road Financing & Economics Committee premiered online meeting on 21 November 2012

An online meeting of the IRF Road Financing & Economics Committee, made possible with the support of IRF member ARUP, took place on 21 November 2012, to discuss progress in its activities. Through a screen sharing and internet conference tool, committee members were able to follow and discuss presentations.

7th IRF Regional Conference: Road Safety in Urban and Rural Roads

The latest in the highly successful series of Regional Conferences on Road Safety organised by IRF's India Chapter was held at the Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi on 1-2 November. Following previous gatherings devoted to Design, Construction & Operation of Roads, Mobility & Safety in Road Transport, Accident Prevention, Institutional Arrangements for the Reduction of Road Fatalities and a Road Safety Strategy and Action Plan for India, this year's event provided a high-level, international platform for addressing a comprehensive range of issues relating to Road Safety on Urban and Rural Roads.

IRF Group of Experts on Road Safety marks its first year of progress

The IRF Group of Experts on Road Safety held its first anniversary meeting on Wednesday 31st October in the fringes of the 7th IRF Regional Conference in Delhi. The 30 members present were happy to report a year of steady and very encouraging progress since the initiative was launched in the same city almost exactly a year earlier.

Launch of IRF Guidelines for the Development of Road Safety Master Plans

Under the auspices of its Group of Experts on Road Safety, IRF has launched a set of comprehensive Guidelines for the Development of Road Safety Master Plans. The Guidelines are designed to guide and provide practical, proven advice to municipal authorities as they strive to make their communities safer through the creation and implementation of road safety master plans.

IRF puts forward policy recommendations in Vienna Manifesto on ITS

From 22-26 October 2012, the city of Vienna, Austria staged the 19th World Congress on Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS). The Congress was organised by the European ITS Association ERTICO and local host the Austrian Ministry of Transport. The IRF was prominently present in Vienna with a number of activities: IRF Washington promoted the 2013 IRF World Meeting with an exhibition booth, and IRF Geneva used the occasion of the World Congress and its first Ministerial Round Table on ITS to launch the IRF Vienna Manifesto on ITS.

IRF addresses Balkan Transport Ministers at first Conference on Motorway PPPs

The International Finance Corporation (IFC) organised a First Balkans Ministerial Conference on Motorway PPPs  on 12-13 November 2012 in Motovun, Croatia. Mrs. Caroline Visser, Deputy Director General and PPP expert of IRF Geneva, was invited to take part in the conference and to address the high level audience. Three ministers from the region were attending the conference, as well as some 35 high level industry and consultancy representatives. The meeting was sponsored by the Swiss Confederation.

IRF fosters dialogue with the European Commission on Green Public Procurement

IRF Geneva enhanced the discussion on green public procurement (GPP) in road infrastructure by convening in Brussels a meeting with the European Commission. Hosted at Michelin EU Office, the meeting - held on 20 November - brought to the table beside IRF members a number of other stakeholders from the sector.

Prominent IRF presence at 16th Meeting of the United Nations Road Safety Collaboration

IRF Geneva continues to play a pivotal role within United Road Safety Collaboration, notably chairing the influential Pillar 2 Project Group dedicated to Safer Roads and Mobility.
It was prominently represented at the 16th Meeting of the Collaboration, convened on 15-16 November in the Executive Board Room of the World Health Organization Headquarters in Geneva.

IRF discusses green procurement at the Global Green Growth Forum (3GF)

Opened by the Prime Minister of Denmark, Helle Thorning-Schmidt, the 2nd Global Green Growth Forum took place on 8-9 October.Speaking at the session on procurement and private finance initiatives, Susanna Zammataro, Acting Director General at IRF Geneva, called for political leadership in order to create an enabling framework for businesses to act.

IRF Geneva and Birmingham University renew collaboration on SRE

IRF and the University of Birmingham have a long standing collaboration on the Senior Road Executive Course. Prof. H. Evdorides and Prof. M. Burrow visited last week IRF Geneva to renew the Memorandum of Understanding between the two organizations and the collaboration on the SRE course as well as a new set of training courses soon to be launched.
