IRF Presents Its Views on the Mid-term Review of the Transport White Paper

Speaking at a transport stakeholder conference, organised by the European Commission on 2 December 2005, Tony Pearce outlined the IRF position on the mid-term review of the white paper on transport policy. The conference, attended by over one hundred participants from seventy European stakeholder associations, formed part of a public consultation process as the Commission seeks to review and revise its 2001 white paper.

IRF Opens 2006 Global Road Achievement Awards Competition

The IRF has announced the opening of the 2006 Global Road Achievement Awards (GRAA) competition. The GRAA program, established in 2000, is an IRF project that further promotes the positive impact that the road development industry makes worldwide. The IRF believes it is important to focus public attention around the world on the many contributions our industry makes to the global economy and quality of life.

IRF conference in Bratislava Held at Key Moment

Participants of an IRF conference in Bratislava welcomed the key timing of the event. The conference, which explored electronic tolling and PPPs in Slovakia and other central and eastern Eurpean countries, came shortly before the launch of the pre-qualification process for forthcoming tenders in Slovakia.

IRF Offers Support to Countries Hit by Earthquake

The IRF has offered its assistance to the countries affected by the earthquake which struck in Pakistan on 8 October. In letters addressed to the governments of Pakistan, India and Afghanistan, Tony Pearce, IRF Geneva/ Brussels Director General, said the IRF was on hand to help in any way possible. He suggested that providing engineers to help assess damage to road and bridge infrastructure and prioritise repairs was one way in which the IRF could be of assistance.

2005 IRF Woman of Year Recognised for Contribution to Rural Roads

For the second consecutive year, the IRF’s annual award was presented to a female recipient. Christina Malmberg Calvo, Country Manager for the Dominican Republic at the World Bank was named IRF Woman of the Year 2005 on account of her lifetime contribution towards the development of rural roads and transport. She receives her Award from hands of  IRF Chairman Manfred Swarovski during the IRF World Meeting, held in Bangkok, Thailand.

Growing support for the IRF’s Black Sea Ring Programme

Participation in a number of recent meetings of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC), have generated strong interest for the IRF’s upcoming activities in the Black Sea region. Tony Pearce, IRF Geneva/ Brussels Director General, presented to the BSEC Transport Working group and the joint OECD/BSEC Business Council the IRF’s views on road development in the region and the role the IRF can play, including plans for an IRF Black Sea Ring Programme.

GRSP and IRF Join Forces

The International Road Federation and Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP) agreed on future strategy and will prupose to their governing bodies mutual membership of each other's organisations. Both organisations share an interest in creating collaboration between business, civil society and governmental organisations with the aim of improving road safety conditions around the world.

International Road Federation Presents its 2004 Award for Woman of the Year to outgoing Commissioner de Palacio

International Road Federation has presented its award for Women of the Year 2004 to Loyola de Palacio, the outgoing Vice-President of the European Commission, for her contributions to road policy and road safety.

IRF presents its award to the first European Ecological Highway

The International Road Federation (IRF) presented its Global Road Achievement Award in the environmental mitigation category to the Junta de Andalucia for its A-381 Jerez-Los Barrios Dual-Carriageway Motorway Project. The motorway is dubbed by the local press as the “first European ecological highway”.
