Congratulations Hildon Vorster

The International Road Federation would like to extend its sincere congratulation to Mr. Hilton Vorster, in winning the Prince Michael International Road Safety Award for the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality in London on 8 December 2009.  Prince Michael of Kent is the patron of the RoadSafe organisation, who recognises exceptional achievements and innovation in road safety internationally.

IRF attends the First Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety in Moscow

IRF was represented at the First Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety by Ms. Nathalie Pereira, the Road Safety Programme Manager, and Mr. Hilton Vorster, the Chairman of the IRF Safer Roads Working Group (SRWG). They were accompanied by a delegation composed of some of the Working Group's members.

This high-level meeting was attended by Ministers responsible for road safety from more than 70 countries, as well as leaders from international, regional, governmental and non-governmental organisations representing more than 140 countries.

IRF Policy Committee on ITS meets in Moscow

The IRF Policy Committee on ITS held its latest meeting in Moscow on 20th November, 2009. The meeting was hosted by Leonid Kozlov of the International Congress of Industrialists & Entrepreneurs (ICIE), Russia.

The meeting was programmed to coincide with the First Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety, as well as celebrations to mark the 200th anniversary of the Russian Ministry of Transport, taking place in Moscow the same week. This enabled the prior organisation, on 19th November, of a successful roundtable discussion on "ITS and Road Safety" in the context of the Ministerial Conference.

IRF delivers a keynote address at the Second International Road Conference in Syria

Organised by the Syrian Ministry of Transport under the auspices of His Excellency the Prime Minister, the second International Road Conference was organised in Damascus from 10-12 November, 2009.

During the opening ceremony, H.E. Yarob Badr, the Syrian Transport Minister, highlighted the importance of the Conference as an opportunity to exchange knowledge and expertise with a view to empowering Road Transport Institutions to better confront key challenges in the domains of roads and traffic safety.

TEN-T Days: EU tightens up relationship with African countries

Organised in Naples on 21-22 October by the European Commission (EC), the Italian Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure and the Swedish Presidency of the European Union, the TEN-T Days 2009 notably aimed at stimulating reflection on future policy framework and at exploring ways to work more closely with African countries. The IRF was represented by Susanna Zammataro, Deputy Director General of the Geneva Programme Centre.

IRF Geneva takes part in the 4th Regional Conference on Accident Prevention: Road Safety Measures organized by the IRF India Chapter in New Delhi

On the 23rd of September 2009, IRF India Chapter jointly with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, launched a National Campaign for the Reduction of Road Fatalities with a target of reducing road deaths by 50% in three years.  Following the launch, the 4th Regional Conference on Accident Prevention: Road Safety Measures, was organized in New Delhi with the aims to offer a forum for meaningful interaction amongst the various stakeholders of the region.

Highly successful IRF seminar in Cairo, addressing Road Safety and Public/Private Partnership

Road infrastructure representatives from all over the world gathered in Cairo on 12-13 October 2009 for a major Road Safety and Public/Private Partnership (PPP) Seminar organised by the International Road Federation (IRF).

The seminar, which was fully subscribed, attracted some 60 high-level international industry representatives interested in learning about the challenges facing the road sector today.

IRF invited to make keynote speech at major Road Safety Conference in Australia

The Roads and Traffic Authority of New South Wales recently invited IRF's Director General, Sibylle Rupprecht, to make the opening keynote address at the 2009 Australasian Road Safety Research, Policing and Education Conference - the most important road safety conference in Australia.

The event was opened by the Australian Minister of Transport, the Hon. David Campbell MP. It attracted more than 500 delegates from across Australia and overseas, and high calibre papers were presented.

Sibylle Rupprecht invited to make a presentation at 10th Transportation Congress of Turkey

The 10th Transportation Congress was held from 27 September and 1 October 2009 in Istanbul. The object of this congress was to ensure that our country figures among the 10 most developed countries in the world by the 100th anniversary of our republic. The Transportation Congress looked at all means of transport, air, rail, maritime and road.

The beauty of human-powered mobility: IRF participates at UNECE workshop promoting cycling and walking in cities

Finding sustainable and alternative ways to move about in urban areas -- such as "humanpowered mobility" like cycling and walking -- was the topic of a workshop held outside Praguefrom 24-25 September 2009. Cycling and walking are examples of environmentally-friendly modes of transport that contribute to lower greenhouse gas emissions in cities, have a low impact on urban congestion and are a boost to human health. National and local policies are needed to support walking and cycling as increasingly attractive and viable modes of urban mobility.

The IRF Policy Committee on ITS held it's latest meeting in Stockholm on 23rd September, 2009.

The Committee was set up in 2008 to raise the profile of ITS among high-level decision makers and generally promote the deployment of ITS as a tool for achieving key transport policy objectives.

IRF makes official statement at the UNECE WP.1 Roundtable - Are we victims of development successes?

The Inland Transport Committee, WP.1 on Road Traffic Safety met at the Palais des Nations, Geneva, 22 – 25 September, 2009.  In the agenda was included a Roundtable interactive day "Are we victims of development successes?" where delegates and experts debated on the issue that fatality rates due to road traffic crashes continue to rise despite the many actions that are already undertaken in the past few years to eliminate this epidemic.  The discussion focused on four major aspects of improved road traffic safety: infrastructure development, safer vehicles, behavior, and enforcement.

IRF makes keynote contribution to World Climate Conference

"Climate prediction and information for decision-making" was the theme of the World Climate Conference - 3 (WCC-3) held in Geneva, Switzerland, from 31st August to 4th September, 2009. The Conference, which brought together more than 2,000 international climate scientists, sectoral experts and decision-makers, notably established a comprehensive Global Framework for Climate Services “to strengthen production, availability, delivery and application of science-based climate prediction and services."

IRF PPP working group meets in Geneva

Under the chairmanship of Michel Démarre, of the French National Federation of Public Works (FNTP), the IRF Working Group on Public Private Partnerships (PPP) met recently in Geneva to review progress and latest developments. The main theme of the working group is currently PPPs for Urban Road Networks. A series of case studies have been developed around this topic, and the working group is now gearing up to assess the results and publish its main findings, conclusions and follow up questions.

TCS Symposium on Forgiving Roads

IRF's Road Safety manager, Nathalie Pereira, participated in this seminar, which was organised by the Swiss Touring Club (TCS) on 2nd September in the Swiss capital, Berne.

Given alarming statistics that almost half of the casualties on Swiss roads end in fatalities, TCS is redoubling its efforts to improve the country’s road safety record.

IRF's Environment Specialist makes keynote contribution to the 28th Southern African Transport Conference

Sustainable transport was the theme of this year's South African Transport Conference (SATC) held in association with the Transportation Research Board of the U.S. National Academies. Around 600 delegates active in the transport sector came together at the CSIR International Convention Centre from 6-9 July for the 28th edition of SATC.

Maria Novikov attended the the Seminar on the Implementation of Annex 8 to the International Convention on Harmonization of Frontier Controls of Goods, 1982, held at UNECE in Geneva on 18 June 2009. IRF invited to make presentation at the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Road Safety Workshop

IRF was invited to make a presentation at the workshop for setting regional and national road traffic casualty reduction targets held in Minsk, Republic of Belarus, on 12-14 May.  This workshop,organised by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN-ECE) and hosted by the Government of the Republic of Belarus, was the first of a series of workshops on target setting funded by the United Nations Development Account (UNDA).

IRF features in high level panel discussion at International Transport Forum

During the International Transport Forum, held in Leipzig, Germany, from 25th to 29th May, Caroline Visser from IRF Geneva took part as a panellist in a high-level workshop on Strategic Transport Infrastructure Planning & Financing. Moderated by Lord Gus MacDonald, former UK Transport Minister and current chairman of Macquarie Capital (Europe), the workshop panellists discussed how to stimulate the economy through transport investments, the role of economic appraisal in prioritising investments and the respective roles of public finance, private finance and public private partnerships (PPP). The objective of the workshop was to formulate key messages for the Ministerial Session taking place a day later on Thursday 28th May.

Senior Road Executive Programme held at the University of Birmingham

The International Road Federation and the School of Civil Engineering at the University of Birmingham (U.K.) hosted a highly successful international Senior Road Executive Programme from 21st to 23rd May, 2009. The seminar gave participants a unique opportunity to exchange ideas and experience, as well as enhance their technical, managerial and policy-making skills. In this respect, the course was designed to equip them with a solid grounding from which to implement improved road management and finance techniques, once back in their own countries.

IRF contributes to the Meeting of the BSEC Working Group on Transport

The IRF was cordially invited to take part in the working group meeting held at the BSEC Headquarters in Istanbul, Turkey from 12-13 February 2009. This meeting was attended by delegates representing BSEC member states, NGO’s and International Organizations.  The Working Group on Transport meeting was chaired by the representative of the Republic of Armenia, who holds currently the presidency of the BSEC, and addressed by the Secretary General of BSEC PERMIS.

IRF Man of the Year 2008

Alain Dupont began his career over 40 years ago as a young engineer with SCREG, today part of the Colas Group. In 1987, he was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of the Colas Group. Under his leadership, Colas grew and thrived. The Group became an industry leader in high safety standards and undertook groundbreaking research into environmentally friendly construction materials. Similarly, it pioneered the assessment of CO2 emissions from road construction projects using a GHG calculator.

IRF features at the China Road Summit 2009

Organised in Shanghai on 6 and 7 May 2009, this year edition of the China Road Summit was attended by executives from Chinese and international companies active in the road infrastructure sector as well as government representatives. The event was opened up by Susanna Zammataro, Deputy Director General IRF Geneva. This was an opportunity to illustrate IRF mission and activities, to introduce to the audience the gTKP project (www.gtkp.com) run by the IRF since March 2009 and to focus in particular on IRF activities in the field of environment. The greenhouse gas calculator for road infrastructure projects developed by the IRF raised great interest from Chinese authorities.

IRF Policy Committee on Intelligent Transport Systems meets in Geneva

On Thursday 2nd April 2009, the IRF Policy Committee on Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) gathered in Geneva for an inaugural meeting, further to its establishment during the ITS World Congress in New York last November. The Policy Committee is made up of high-level experts in ITS and brings together IRF members, national & supranational governments, regional and national ITS associations, research institutes and private sector businesses active in ITS. The objective of the Committee is to foster the development and implementation of ITS by promoting its integration in transport policies as a major tool to make roads safer, make them flow better and improve their environmental performance.
